Tuesday Travel Tip: Choose Your Seat Wisely

Where do you sit on an airplane? We all have our preferences about the window or the aisle, and I assume you take that into consideration. But what about the row? Do you sit in the front so that you can be one of the first off? Or the exit row for the extra leg room?

Whenever I fly coach, I sit near the back. Why? Because of my carry on. I never check bags, and there is always room in the overhead bin at the back of the plane. Some airlines board from the back to the front, so already you have an advantage by getting on before other passengers. Even if you don't board first, if you are sitting in, say, row 9, you run the risk of having to store your bag at row 10 or even further back. Then, when you arrive at your destination, you have to wait for others behind you to gather their things and leave before you can walk back against the flow of traffic and retrieve your bag. If you sit in the back, your bag will always be right above you or on your way out. So easy, so smooth.

By the way, I avoid the very last row since the seats don't recline. One must take that into consideration as well.
