Tuesday Trip Tip: Roll 'em

Folding your clothes may work well in your drawer, but when you travel, you need a new strategy. Fold your clothes into a standard width, then roll them. Not only will it reduce wrinkles, it will allow you to fit more into your bag.

Really.

Try it.

Change Your Experience

Some people seem to live each day in such a way that the only way things will work is if everything else in the world goes perfectly.

Example A: commutes.

If you leave home at the last possible moment, every detail of your commute must go perfectly for you to be on time. You must catch every train, get every stoplight green, and definitely not get caught behind a slow walker.

I would venture to say that every detail of your commute is not going to go perfectly every day. So then you get stressed. The traffic is huge. There's nothing you can do about.

But there is. You can't change the other commuters but you can change your experience of the commute. Leave earlier. That way, when something goes wrong, it doesn't bother you. It is out of your control, so you can sit back into the experience without stress. You won't be late. Nothing is wrong.

In what parts of your day do you need to change your experience? How will you do that?

Tuesday Travel Tip: Accessorize

Accessories can make the difference between a dull set of clothing and an outfit that really works. When you want to travel light, bring neutral clothes with interesting accessories. The accessories can add interesting variety to your look while not adding excess bulk or weight to your bags. Don't just think about jewelry, consider belts, scarves, hats and glasses.

A word of caution: don't over do it. One or two key pieces is enough to do the trick! ****************************************

Tuesday Travel Tip: Wear One, Bring One

Some of the most bulky things to pack on a trip are shoes. On a short trip, my rule is wear one pair, bring one pair. It's actually best to start by choosing shoes when you pack. The shoes can determine your color scheme and which outfits go best with those shoes.

Really? Just two pair of shoes? It can be done ... mostly. I understand that sometimes you need specialty shoes on your trip. For example, if you are in training for a marathon, you need your high-quality running shoes. In my case, I often need my tap or ballet shoes. I fully understand the reasons for bringing an extra pair of shoes in those cases. However, bringing separate shoes for every outfit of your trip soon leads to heavy, bulky bags. Find the middle ground.

$59 Online Interactive eCoaching Starts March 15

Sometimes you start a journey because you know that it's the best way to get to a desirable destination. Other times you start a journey unsure where it will take you.

When I started to offer online interactive eCoaching in February, I had a general idea where each course would lead. I had created a rough syllabus for the four weeks of daily blog posts that would be the content of the course. However, each course was deeply influenced by the participants, who also took this journey without a clear idea of where it would lead. We shared touching stories, humorous comments, creative challenges, and honest personal exploration. Here's what one participant wrote about her experience in one of the courses. Another participant wrote,
This has been a fascinating journey. I am surprised by how much I look forward to each new day's assignment, and at how the prospect of others reading what I write motivates me and encourages me to continue.
And that's just two of the many positive comments I received. Yes, there are things to improve, and I'll improve those things as I do it all again.

I'd like to include you in the journey. Join our community for either "Personalize: Explore Who You Were Created to Be" or "Organize: Create Inner and Outer Order."I can't guarantee where you'll end up, but I can guarantee that it will be a fruitful journey. Find out more and sign up here.

The Wisdom of Mrs. C

Have you seen Happy Days: A New Musical? Neither have I, but I started rehearsals for it yesterday as Marion Cunningham. So far, my favorite scene is between Marion and Fonzie. Marion discovers Fonzie distressed over ... something (I won't give away the plot). They make some small talk about Fonzie's heroes, James Dean and Elvis, then she asks him to talk about his problem. He doesn't want to.

Marion: I always thought you and I were friends. You can talk to me.
Fonzie: No, thank you.
Marion: I bet James and Elvis would talk to someone rather than worrying themselves sick. Talking helps you make decisions.
Fonzie: I can't run around asking people's opinions. What would people think? They'd think I'm not cool. That's what they'd think.
Marion: I'm told Elvis and James wouldn't care what other people thought.

How wise is Marion? She knows that talking helps you make decisions. She knows that cool people don't worry about what other people think. (She also knows how to make wonderful pies).

When you have things to decide, large or small, talk to someone you trust. Apparently it will make you as cool as Fonzie, Elvis and James Dean.

Tuesday Travel Tip: Choose Your Seat Wisely

Where do you sit on an airplane? We all have our preferences about the window or the aisle, and I assume you take that into consideration. But what about the row? Do you sit in the front so that you can be one of the first off? Or the exit row for the extra leg room?

Whenever I fly coach, I sit near the back. Why? Because of my carry on. I never check bags, and there is always room in the overhead bin at the back of the plane. Some airlines board from the back to the front, so already you have an advantage by getting on before other passengers. Even if you don't board first, if you are sitting in, say, row 9, you run the risk of having to store your bag at row 10 or even further back. Then, when you arrive at your destination, you have to wait for others behind you to gather their things and leave before you can walk back against the flow of traffic and retrieve your bag. If you sit in the back, your bag will always be right above you or on your way out. So easy, so smooth.

By the way, I avoid the very last row since the seats don't recline. One must take that into consideration as well.

In Between

I recently spent three days in a hotel ballroom for a meeting. There is something about hotel ballrooms that can suck the life out of a person, yet sometimes they are truly the best place to meet. It was also one of those meetings that had the potential to suck the life out of a person with wall-to-wall information, literally and figuratively. There was so much important information to cover with very little free space in the schedule. Yet the meeting organizers realized that not only were the sessions important, but the space between the sessions was also important. During the in-between times, people connected with one another, figured out how to apply the information, or simply let it all soak in.

In-between times are important. This meeting itself fell in an in-between time for me, moving from one show to the next as a professional actress. It's time to acknowledge the end of one experience and get ready for the beginning of another.

Whether you transition from one job to the next or just one conversation to the next, you need a proportionate pause in-between. How can you build in more in-between times? How can you better use the in-between times that you have?

Bring What You Need

Part of the reality of life in New York is that occasionally you turn a corner to discover a film or television show being shot on location. Films and television shows are remarkable because they set up shop anywhere in the city (that they can get a permit) and bring everything with them. Seriously, everything. They have bathrooms, dressing rooms, hair, makeup, craft services (food), lights, props, costumes and even a generator that all arrives in trucks. They park along the street, do their shoot, and drive away. Done.

They know what they need in order to be successful, and bring everything with them. What do you need in order to be successful? What do you need to bring with you?

Tuesday Travel Tip: Coordinate

Pack less, but pack smarter.

When you go on short trips, choose a color scheme. That way, everything mixes and matches with just a couple pair of shoes and a few accessories. Need more options? Add black or other basics such as denim or khaki with a splash of your color scheme.

Since I travel non-stop, I actually have a color scheme for each season of the year. It makes shopping easier to be able to walk into a store and seek out certain colors. I buy quality instead of quantity, but more on that another time.
